The newest product from Google’s AI team, called “Whisk,” is revolutionizing the way users interact with technology by allowing them to upload photographs instead of typing words to obtain a unique, AI-generated image.

Whisk is not just your typical image editor. It is a creative tool designed to inspire users and provide them with new, innovative ways to explore visual content. Unlike traditional image editors, Whisk is meant to be a fun AI function rather than a professional tool.

With Whisk, users can upload images of subjects, settings, and styles to create a merged, AI-generated image. By mixing different categories and altering inputs, users can create a variety of products such as plushies, enamel pins, and stickers. The possibilities are endless with Whisk.

Thomas Iljic, Google Labs director of product management, explained that Whisk is all about allowing users to remix subjects, scenes, and styles in new and creative ways. It offers rapid visual exploration without the need for pixel-perfect edits. Users can also direct details using words, but images are not always necessary to create stunning, AI-generated artwork.

Whisk builds upon the success of OpenAI’s Dall-E, a text-to-image production tool that flooded social media with AI-generated artwork in 2021. Google’s Whisk takes this concept further by offering an image-to-image generator that enhances the user’s creative capabilities.

Google acquired DeepMind in 2014 and utilized its generative AI technology to develop Whisk. The tool uses Google’s primary AI service, Gemini, which was introduced in December 2023, as well as Imagen 3, DeepMind’s latest text-to-image generator. When users upload photographs, Imagen 3 receives captions from Gemini to generate the final image. Instead of creating an exact reproduction of the prompt, the technique captures the essence of the topic, allowing for unique and creative variations.

In early development, Whisk is currently available in the United States on Google Labs’ website. The product showcases Google’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of AI technology and delivering innovative consumer products that leverage the latest advancements in machine learning.

Dan Ives, managing director and senior equities analyst at Wedbush Securities, hailed Whisk as another “flex the muscles moment” for Google in the AI and tech industry. He emphasized the importance of AI products like Whisk in Google’s 2025 “treasure chest” of new products, which includes collaborations with companies like Samsung and Qualcomm to develop a new Android operating system.

Overall, Whisk represents a significant step forward in AI technology and demonstrates Google’s dedication to providing users with creative tools that inspire and empower them to explore new possibilities in visual content creation. As AI continues to evolve, products like Whisk will play a crucial role in shaping the future of technology and enhancing the user experience across various industries.
