Cathay Pacific’s entire Airbus A350 fleet is currently undergoing thorough inspections after engine issues were identified, causing delays in multiple flights. The Hong Kong-based airline, known for its long-haul flights, experienced an engine component failure on flight CX383 from Hong Kong to Zurich. As a result, the airliner had to return to Hong Kong, prompting a full investigation of the fleet.
In a statement to CNN, Cathay Pacific addressed the issue, stating that the engine component failure on CX383 was the first of its kind on any A350 aircraft globally. Subsequent checks revealed that multiple aircraft in its 48-plane fleet required engine component replacements. While the exact nature of the engine issue was not specified, the airline confirmed that 15 planes were found to have components in need of repair by Tuesday afternoon.
In response to the situation, Cathay Pacific canceled 24 flights on Monday and Tuesday to conduct inspections and undertake necessary repairs. The airline also announced the cancellation of 10 regional return flights scheduled for Wednesday, but long-haul flights were not affected by the issue.
Reports from Reuters indicated that a fuel nozzle malfunction in the engine caused the problems, though Cathay Pacific has not officially commented on the specifics of the issue. The engine model in question, the Rolls-Royce Trent XWB, powers the A350 family of aircraft according to Airbus. Rolls-Royce, the manufacturer of the engine, is collaborating with Cathay Pacific, Airbus, and regulatory authorities to investigate the incident.
