As part of a £300 million investment plan, Belfast harbor is planning a £90 million upgrade to better service wind energy projects. This investment includes the construction of a new deepwater quay and hundreds of residences in close proximity to the city center. The goal is to create a modern port capable of accommodating wind energy projects and cruise ships, ensuring Belfast remains a key player in the industry.
In the past, Belfast has been a base for wind power installation companies such as Dong Energy, now Ørsted, for projects in the Irish Sea. With the completion of these projects, the port shifted its focus to cruise ships. However, with the expected return of wind turbines between the end of 2027 and the beginning of 2028, Belfast is preparing to welcome back wind energy firms. The region is in a prime location for offshore wind projects, with an estimated capacity of more than thirty gigawatts from thirty windfarms within 200 kilometers of Belfast.
Joe O’Neill, the CEO of Belfast harbor, has mentioned that there has been a lot of interest from wind energy companies in the area. The harbor is keen on exploring not only fixed wind turbines but also floating offshore developments, which could provide substantial renewable energy for the UK and Ireland. O’Neill also highlighted that Belfast faces competition from ports like Hull and Mostyn in the wind industry but remains optimistic about its prospects.
The investment in the port will be funded by its profits, with a focus on supporting developers of wind energy projects. The harbor is also looking to revitalize its waterfront and harbor estate, with plans to build more residences and improve the overall area. Additionally, the port remains a significant hub for cruise ships, with around twenty-five million pounds in revenue generated annually.
