Pope Francis concluded his first day in Papua New Guinea with a focus on helping underprivileged populations and emphasizing the importance of the Catholic Church’s role in supporting vulnerable communities. During his time in Papua New Guinea, Pope Francis spoke to church leaders in Port Moresby about the need to prioritize the peripheries of the country and provide assistance to the poorest areas. He emphasized the importance of supporting those who have been harmed both morally and physically by prejudice and superstition, particularly in a country where high rates of sexual assault make it one of the most dangerous places for women and girls, according to Human Rights Watch.
The Pope visited the Shrine of Mary Help of Christians, where Catholics in Papua New Guinea engage in humanitarian and educational activities. He also visited the Caritas Technical Secondary School for impoverished girls, as well as the “street ministry” and “Callan services” that provide support to the destitute and disabled in the community. His visit to the girls’ school was particularly significant given the challenges faced by women in the country.
During his address at the shrine, Pope Francis urged bishops and priests in Papua New Guinea to follow the example of God, which is one of closeness, tenderness, and compassion. He thanked the congregation in English for their patience and offered them a blessing, asking for their prayers and jokingly requesting that they pray for him, not against him.
Throughout his visit, Pope Francis was greeted warmly by the people of Papua New Guinea, who welcomed him with colorful native garb, singing, and dancing. Despite his 87 years of age, the Pope appeared happy and engaged during his interactions with the local community.
